Won't Bake or Broil
Stoves & ovens are generally pretty simple devices. First check if you have a warranty and call the warranty company. If you have a computerized stove & oven then we do not recommend that you try fixing it yourself. You may end up costing yourself more money that way.
To diagnose the problem, turn on the broiler. Does it come on? Turn on the bake cycle, does the bake element come on? The broiler is the element on the top of the oven, and the bake element is the one on the bottom. If one or the other works, then you probably have a bad element. If neither turn on then you could have a bad relay, circuit board, or timer.
To check an individual element, take a flashight and shine it on the element that isn't working. Look for a spot where it appears to have melted. If you see a melted spot on the element then you need to change it.
Check the codes by looking in your manual or looking online. If you check the codes and the code is reporting a general error or if the code is reporting something that is definitely not right, then you could have a bad computer board. We change a lot of computer boards. This is not recommended for the homeowner to change themselves.
Stove Burner Won't Heat
There are generally two major types of stoves, ones with heater coils, and ones that are glass-top.
Glass-top stoves are more fragile than people think. Generally we recommend that you call a service professional, but if you do remove the glass then bear in mind that it is very heavy and breaks easily. People think that because it is under the constant stress of high heat that it can take a punishment, but that's not necessarily true. Glass is very strong but shatters easily if just tapped in the wrong way.
If you have the more common coil type stove top, then you can easily fix this problem yourself if one is burned out. You may see a hot spot on the coil or a melt mark, or a crack, or a break. Even if you don't see anything the coil could be bad. Take out the drip pan and then simply pull on the coil element. It should come out easily. Take it with you to a home improvement store and get the same size and type connector replacement.
